Fortune Cookie Wisdom

I thought I’d have a little fun this week with my post, and share some of the sayings I’ve collected from fortune cookies…what I like to refer to as “Fortune Cookie Wisdom”. ;-)

Do you know where the Fortune Cookie originated from? Much to most American’s surprise, it is not a Chinese invention ~ fortune cookies were actually invented in California. One legend is that in the 1900’s, a plan was created to transform San Francisco’s Chinatown from a ghetto into a cute tourist attraction, to promise visitors a real Oriental experience. Supposedly, increased tourism led to the invention of the fortune cookie to fill the void of a dessert item. In the 1930’s, in order to fill the visitors demands for a dessert, a worker in San Francisco’s Kay Heong Noodle Factory invented a plain flat cookie, and while still warm, was folded around a little piece of paper on which a hand-written prediction or piece of Chinese wisdom would be found.

One of my favorite restaurant’s is Pei-Wei’s, and with as frequently as I visit there (wish they offered something similar to “frequent flyer miles”…ha~ha), I have tons of “Fortune Cookie Wisdom” to choose from (lol!) ~ here are some of my favorites that I’ve kept:

  • Good luck is the result of good planning.
  • The simplest answer is to act.
  • Advancement will come with hard work.
  • Your love of life can carry you through any circumstance.
  • Always surround yourself with true friends.
  • There will be many surprises: unexpected gains are likely.
  • Adventure can be a real happiness.
  • A great man never ignores the simplicity of a child.
  • Be assertive when decisive action is needed.
  • You are a lover of words, someday you should write a book.
  • The courage to be great lies deep within each of us.
  • The love of your life will appear in front of you unexpectedly!
  • The problems of today will soon be buried by the sand of time.
  • Honesty and friendship bring you fortune.
  • Learning is a treasure which accompanies us everywhere.
  • Take the advice of a faithful friend.
  • Luck will visit you on the next new moon.
  • You will soon emerge victorious from the maze you’ve been traveling in.
  • Do not let great ambitions overshadow small success.
  • Happier days are definitely ahead of you.
  • A quiet evening with friends is the best tonic for a long day.
  • The respect and help of influential people will soon be yours.
  • Many successes will accompany you this year.
  • You are never selfish with your advice or your help.
  • Set the right example. It will inspire others.
  • Endurance and persistence will be rewarded.

Yes, I know…a couple of them are rather “silly”, yet quite a few do make you s top and think ~ so much so, that I’ve shared some of them on my Facebook page ~ do any of them seem familiar?  :-)

I hope you’ve enjoyed my “off the beaten path” post this week…and BTW, my blog’s byline is from a fortune cookie ;-)

P.S. I appreciate you stopping by and would enjoy hearing your personal thoughts about these various fortune cookie sayings, how about you, have you ever come across a fortune cookie wisdom that really had significance or special meaning for you? Please feel free to share in the comment box below. And, if you have found my post to be of value to you, and feel it would also be to others, then please free free to share it with your friends on Twitter, Facebook, etc.

    Hi Christine,

thank you for the great information on Fortune Cookies and for sharing those wisdoms.

I didn’t know that Fortune Cookies originated in San Fransisco.

Sometimes I found some of those ‘wisdoms’ seem to fit with what was going on in my life, just like the I ching.
Yes, frequent ‘flyer miles’ in restaurants would be great, or like coffee card, where you get a free one after 4 coffees.

    Have a great weekend.

I thoroughly enjoyed this post, Christine! And that was news to me, that the fortune cookie originated in California.

I’ve had plenty of opportunity to look at fortune cookie fortunes too. My husband works with a man whose wife works in a factory where they make fortune cookies, and every so often William sends Ian home with a big bag of culls for our kids. Some of them were overbaked… some had no fortunes in them… some had TWO.

All those fortune cookies were a welcome treat when all 7 kids were still living at home. But 4 years ago the 3 girls moved into town together, and 19 months ago our oldest son followed them. Now we have only the 3 youngest boys at home. For a while there we were having to find some innovative ways to eat fortune cookies! Nathaniel (11) would eat them broken up in a bowl with milk!

Finally everyone got tired of eating fortune cookies, and Ian told William, “NO MORE!!!”

We had some good laughs when talking about the food they serve in Australian Chinese restaurants. He didn’t understand what “Fried ice-cream” was and said it must be a “Westerner’s” invention. There’s a lot of food that is westernized for us.

    Hey Christine,

Enjoyed this post today and go through slowly these little wisdoms of time (some of them are actually great advise, too).

What stood out for me in this selcetion was… “Take the advice of a faithful friend.”… It’s natural that we receive advise from people around us and sometimes take the advise and try to proof ourselves if it fits our needs. But if we have a friend who believes in our cause and truly and honestly want to see us succeed (like parents for their children) then nothing shall stop us to trust this advise. Exactly this attitude is one of the core motivators why tribes are existing… People who are faithful and believe in the goal/change their actions shall establish and this is communicated within the tribe big things can happen… Big changes will take place.

Thx for the effert to put some of these quotes together on this post and I learned a little bit as well about the background of these deserts… hehehe

    Christine…

Awesome posting. I didn’t know that about Fortune Cookies so thanks for the information! As for those sayings, a few of them really resonated with me and I wanted to also say thank you for giving me some additional inspiration.

I often find myself (months after) finding some of my favorites buried deep inside my wallet. I too am a fortune fan.

Keep up the good work and I’ll be back again.

This is a fabulous post. I had never thought to save my fortune cookies even if they were as profound as some of these are.

What fodder for FB posts and even a blog !!! You definitely think outside the box, are open to your surroundings and obviously life itself and that is awesome !!

    Hi Christine,

Your post is delightful and I learned a lot about fortune cookies! At first I wanted to list my top 3 but there are too many good ones so I’m listing my top 5.

Great post Christine, I loved all of them.
The story behind each one is probably even more interesting.
I’ve collected quite a few of my own over the years, some of my favorite are

    - Anything is possible with a winning heart.
    - If you have no critics you’ll have no success.
    - You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him discover it within himself.

    Thanks for sharing, :)

As Pacino puts it in “The Recruit”: “Nothing its what it seems” … I thought they were from China (lol). Still, a chinese man, it sounds like. That’s good enough. Anyway, I’m not big into fortunes. I believe they separate us from the one true creator and genuine wisdom, however some of these are great “sayings” … nothing more! Christine, I thought I’d stop by being a former TSAer and all and show you that I haven’t forgotten what you mean to me. You’re a great writer. God’s Blessings, Curt

That’s funny! I collect those fortunes, too! :) I keep them in an empty fish bowl. I like how some offer really good advice and others are sort of like something a fortune teller or astrologer would tell you. Stuff that can apply to anyone. I like to sprinkle the advice ones in conversations with my girlfriends. I think it’s hilarious.

    Hello Christine,
I always thought Fortune Cookies came from China. I am surprised to see they came from California. I loved your post. Next time I eat a Fortune Cookie I will save the saying.
These quotes were wonderful to share.
It was fun to ready your son’s response as well.

    Hey Christine,

It’s the little things that count and those little messages in a fortune cookie can be quite inspiring.
I had no idea that they were not really invented in China either.

When I was a kid we used to always end the reading of a fortune cookie with the words “in bed”…almost like an amen after prayer. I still do it to this day and it gives quite a chuckle, especially some of the ones you just posted…lol
